Wherever you are at in your life, whatever has led you to seeking counselling now, I will meet you there and we will begin this journey where you are now.
My approaches are reflexive and reflective. I began to pursue my academic journey in the mid-90's, I have taken the approach to study and life as; it is the journey, not always the destination that matters. This approach has led me to experience vast graduate and post-graduate qualifications; from sociology, psychology, life sciences, behavioural sciences, social and community work. My academic experiences have somewhat mirrored my approach to work and life in general. With strong self-belief, hope, commitment and action I have gained many valuable experiences and relationships. From working across the not-for-profit sector, mandatory sector, community and clinical mental health settings and the private psychological services area. Added to this, my quest for knowledge stems from my passion of helping and supporting others, which I have loads of lived experience with.
Working with you, this means I can be adaptable, understanding, resourceful, flexible and authentic in how I will work with you supporting you as you embark on your own therapy journey. After an initial 'getting to know you' session you can expect that I will tailor therapy so that it's relevant, meaningful and useful to you. Some of the approaches you might experience in therapy sessions may include narrative therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural techniques, acceptance and commitment therapy processes, emotion-focused and emotional neglect theories, crisis and trauma informed counselling, clinical mental health and wellbeing recovery approaches. These are all therapies I have accessed, studied, completed courses and worked with.
Beginning therapy can seem daunting, or exciting, sometimes a mixture of both. We will explore together, the history and current factors that led you to attending therapy. As we work through past and presenting issues, unhelpful thought patterns, stuck behaviours and wrong-headed actions may emerge, that once voiced, shared, and re-examined in a safe collaborative therapeutic relationship can be healing, transformative and restorative. As you develop deeper awareness, understanding and inner peace, discovering new, alternative, and yet unknown possibilities may emerge and you may feel empowered, valued and inspired.
The length of therapy can be up to you; initially you may want a brief number of sessions to get you back on track. Or you may want to return in the future and pick up on working with old or new issues as they have arisen.
We will discuss and develop a plan of what therapy looks like for your individual circumstances and needs. It would be hoped that you see therapy as you having an active voice and role in your sessions. I am open to hear your thoughts, ideas and negotiate a therapy plan that works best for you. Following on from therapy, it is hoped you will have been empowered by deeper self-learning and understanding of yourself, giving you hope and a renewed sense of inner resolve that; you have got this.
